Alcoa invests with ASC again!

Alcoa Willowdale is a mine site south of the rural town of Waroona and has been producing bauxite for the nearby Wagerup Alumina Refinery since 1984. The Bauxite ore from Willowdale and nearby Huntly site help produce approx. 45%of Australia Alumina and 19% of Australia’s aluminium.

It has a workforce of approximately 240 people and a large workshop maintenance area to look after the dump trucks, water carts and light vehicles.

January 2016 a large bushfire caused asset and equipment damage to the site leaving Willowdale with the task of utilising existing older sweeper and scrubber equipment that was stored for a rainy day or smoky day in this case.

The Willowdale site is really dusty. The machines brought in for servicing are full of red dust. The sheds are open and when the wind blows this only adds extra dust to the maintenance area. When mixed with grease and oils it becomes a challenge. They requested machines that were reliable, proven and serviceable. Their old sweeper was simply too small and they needed a bigger machine. The challenge after servicing was to remove oils and grease before the next job starts.

WA Area Manager Ross Sheehan visited the Willowdale site late in 2018 to see firsthand the area to be swept and scrubbed by the machines.

The ASC Eureka machines have proven themselves over and over in other WA mining sites, so Ross presented a solution to the Willowdale team to rent two machines over a 12-month period to ensure the machines would be up to the job. A Eureka E83 ride on scrubber and a Eureka E81 walk behind scrubber were chosen. Dean in the workshop was very impressed with the robust feel of the E81 and commented “it feels strongly built and it scrubbed the floor better than expected”.

After 12 months of renting, the Asset Management/Maintenance Planning team had built a strong case to purchase new machines. It was decided to purchase the Eureka E100 and Eureka E81.

The machines were purchased and delivered onsite within weeks of a purchase order placed. The machines had been despatched form ASC’s Western Australian warehouse.

A strong relationship has been forged between ASC and Alcoa Willowdale. In the end a great solution was provided by Ross Sheehan and now the Willowdale site has world class floors that reflect the great value they add to the Western Australian economy.
